Gender-based violence (GBV) is the most extremeexpression of unequal gender relations insociety and one of the most widespread violationsof human rights. While GBV disproportionallyaffects women and girls, it also affects menand boys. These abuses take place all over theworld in homes, schools, work-places andcommunities. But GBV is preventable and educationand educational institutions can play acentral role in ending GBV. This brief providesan overview of the relationship between educationand GBV.1It illustrates how education canreduce exposure to, and perpetration of GBV,but also highlights the negative impact GBV canhave on lifelong learning.
