Stockholm+50 side events

A crucial international environmental meeting is held in Stockholm on 2 and 3 June 2022. The theme of Stockholm+50 is "a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity". Sida is participating in several side events, listed below. Most sessions are open for everyone to watch online, check the link at each event.

Water Alignment: To enable innovation and finance for a climate-resilient future

A holistic approach to water management is key to achieving Agenda 2030 successfully, to ensure a healthy and resilient world for future generations. For this to happen, there is a need to dramatically shift the way we think and act on water. This session will focus on highlighting how water alignment and ecosystem thinking can be applied to make transformational change possible through working with governments, civil society, private sector and investors, youth and marginalised groups.

Waste Management – An urgent issue to be addressed at the local and municipal
level to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and to fight climate change

Local authorities and municipalities play a pivotal role for waste management. This event will
support the leadership dialogue 1 through promoting systemic change toward zero-pollution and zero-waste societies by bringing together mayors of several cities and representatives of international organizations to discuss the issues, outline solutions, and forge new partnerships.

Revisiting Economics and Finance to Accelerate Action for People & Planet

Past economic models are no-longer useful in a world of increasing biosphere fragility, climate
risks, socioeconomic uncertainties, inequalities and poverty following COVID-19 and ongoing conflicts. In this event, policy makers, economists, UN leaders and civil society discuss solutions for accelerating progress towards the SDGs by revisiting economics and finance.

Increasing Financial Action for Green and Sustainable Development

Event organizers will showcase ongoing work and present promising financing tools, (including green and sustainability-linked bonds, investment vehicles, etc.) to catalyze institutional and private investments across emerging economies and will discuss potential directions going forward. Event participants will reflect on advantages and possibilities of potential solutions and analyze challenges in making institutional and private finance work to reduce poverty and support a green recovery in developing economies.

Financing Locally-led Action for People, Nature and Climate in the Decade of Action

Locally-led action is critical for addressing the crises of nature, climate and poverty, yet research shows that finance and decision-making is not reaching indigenous people and local communities in sufficient volumes to deliver their priorities. This event will explore how leaders at Stockholm+50 can finance locally led action through the Decade of Action.

Feminist Climate Justice: Empowering women and girls through the rule of law

Women and girls are at the forefront of transformative climate action. Societies with higher levels of gender equality are also characterised by less deforestation, air pollution and resource loss. This event will discuss how concrete measures and initiatives to empower women and girls to claim their environmental rights can advance a healthy planet for the prosperity of all, turn global commitments into local action, break through silos, and catalyse progress in the Decade of Action in line with Leadership Dialogue 3.

Investing in the Amazon’s future: Empowering indigenous communities as natural custodians

Rapid deforestation, mainly driven by unsustainable agricultural expansion and logging is together
with global warming turning the Amazon into a net emitter. There is an urgent need to shift investments and economic development that drive deforestation to alternative ones. This session will share experiences on how to proactively work to preserve a healthy Amazon through participatory models in which the capacity of local communities is strengthened.

Vision for a Responsible and Sustainable Minerals and Metals Sector

A responsible and sustainable mining sector is crucial for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement goals, the post-2020 global Biodiversity Framework and for a sustainable and inclusive recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. This event will discuss how all stakeholders are key in raising the level of ambition of the mining sector to achieve sustainable outcomes while leveraging increasing automation and digitization. The event will illustrate this by addressing the environmental and social challenges in the mining sector and how to build back better from the pandemic and ensure a sustainable and inclusive mining sector.
