Digital Identity

The purpose of this brief is to provide background and summary on key debates around digital identification in development. It aims to describe some of the key terms and types of digital identity systems, their role in development and what the opportunities are as well as the key challenges, and pointers to ways identification systems can better contribute to development outcomes. This brief is intended for Sida policy and programme managers with limited or no existing knowledge of digital identity in development to serve as a foundational briefing on the subject and to signpost further information. As the field of digital identity is a rapidly evolving one this brief describes the field at the time of writing, and should not be read as a definitive statement of the field or of Sida’s position on the field.

Climate Tech

This brief aims at explaining the potential of liking/ using climate tech to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience to climate change amongst the poorest segments of society as well as exploring how to contribute to mitigation measures and a just transition for developing countries/for all. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shows, climate change is no longer a distant threat, but a reality that threatens the livelihoods and opportunities of the most vulnerable and marginalized social groups and communities. The intense fires in the Amazon, the Arctic circle and California, the continued loss of biodiversity, degradation of important ecosystems, and the emergence of novel diseases of animal origins all illustrate the complex risks and impacts associated with these changes.

Trade, employment and poverty reduction – an evidence-based overview

This brief takes a closer look at the relationship between trade, employment and poverty reduction. Rather than being comprehensive on all aspects, it aims to give an evidence-based overview of some circumstances under which trade can lead to employment generation and poverty reduction that is relevant to Sida and its partners. Sida also recognises the complexities in this context and the importance of other thematic areas and aspects related to for instance the environment, climate change and gender equality, which however are not covered in this brief.

High on Other People’s Money? The Implications of Increasing Debt in Sida’s Partner Countries

State lending and borrowing offers opportunities for countries to enhance their national goals. The historically low interest rates during the recent years, combined with limited investment opportunities in higher income and middle-income countries, have provided many low- and middle-income countries the opportunity to boost their development efforts through loans. If the investments made with the loans lead to increased productivity, economic growth and tax revenues that outweigh the cost of the loan, the loan is sustainable, and the development outcome of state lending is positive.

Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)

Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are fundamental to health and well-being, gender equality, democracy, peace and security, and sustainable development. SRHR is grounded in the right and the ability of all individuals to decide over their own bodies, and to live healthy and productive lives. This brief provides an overview of SRHR from a Sida perspective. The intended audience is Sida staff but partners may also find it useful. Sida uses the Guttmacher-Lancet Commission (GLC) definition of SRHR (see box 1)1

Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

Sida, along with other international development agencies, recognises the importance of being evidence- based in its policy and programming in order to ensure that development- and humanitarian interventions have maximum impact. Understanding what works in development programming is a core commitment in Sida’s Operational Plan (2020-23). This series of ‘Evidence mapping briefs’ on different thematic areas is one of a number of initiatives intended to help Sida policy specialists, managers and programme officers become more evidence-based in their work. Sida headquarters and field staff may be engaged in a range of tasks for which evidence is necessary – for example, contributing to the development of a bilateral, regional or thematic strategy, developing a programme, or appraising project proposals. To this end, the brief is developed as a versatile tool which can cater to their various needs.

Freshwater Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Poverty Alleviation

Freshwater ecosystems and its biodiversity provide services to billions of people. However, the current rate of wetland loss is three times that of forest loss, and populations of freshwater vertebrate species have declined at more than twice the rate of that of land or ocean vertebrates. Freshwater ecosystems are crucial for food security , drinking water supply, urban water management, agricultural water management and disaster risk reduction (DRR) and hence is a major contributor to achieving Agenda 2030 and especially goals 6, 14 and 15. Emerging threats to freshwater biodiversity have increased the last years but there are ways to reverse the rapid worldwide decline in freshwater biodiversity and the linked threats to poverty alleviation. To further strengthen and deepen Sida’s work on freshwater biodiversity, issues to consider include: better governance of water and freshwater ecosystem services with a strengthened focus on environmental flows; nature-based solutions; informed investments in hydropower, climate change and resilience and improved water quality .
