The Rohingya have been discriminated against and persecuted for decades in neighbouring Myanmar. It is estimated that there are around 900,000 Rohingya in Bangladesh, where they still live as refugees in the Cox&#8217;s Bazar district. There, they are scattered across thirty overcrowded makeshift camps where local authorities and humanitarian stakeholders try to meet basic needs for services and protection in difficult conditions.\u003Csup>2\u003C\u002Fsup>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The government of Bangladesh also started moving refugee volunteers from Cox&#8217;s Bazar to the remote island in the Bay of Bengal, Bhasan Char. The government plans to resettle around 100,000 volunteer refugees in 2022. Here, as in Cox&#8217;s Bazar, efforts and support will be required.\u003Csup>3\u003C\u002Fsup>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Organised crime is high in border areas. Tightened security measures such as fencing around camps and restrictions linked to COVID-19 have had a negative impact on refugees&#8217; freedom of movement. But it has also their opportunities to support themselves and their access to essential social services.
