T C Whitmore
SAREC has financed projects in Malaysia on tropical forest management since 1987. Two collaborative projects between the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and forest companies in Sabah, Malaysia have received support from SAREC during the period 1991 to 1996. One of the projects is on Silvicultural refinement of selective logging and the other is concerned with Hydrology and nutrients on conversion to plantations. The main objectives of these projects were to increase the understanding of ecosystem responses to different forest management systems as well as capacity building of Swedish foresters and Malaysian forest engineers. The aim of the review was to evaluate the projects in the light of SARECs overall aims as well as the objectives of the Malaysian programme. The review incorporates looking at results, implementation, relevance, cost effectivenessand quality of both projects in relation to project description and budget.
