Since 1995, Swedish official aid has gone to political parties in Eastern and Central Europe as well as in developing countries. This form of support was preceded by an official investigation that underlined the crucial importance of well-functioning political parties for stable democracy. However, as this kind of aid is politically delicate, a rather unusual model for channeling funds has been set up. Thus, funds are distributed to the seven political parties in the Swedish parliament in accordance to the number of mandates they hold in that congregation. The actual projects are then carried out by organisations that are associated with these parties.
