The Swedish public's view on integration in the Baltic Sea area

- Democratic legitimacy for a Baltic Sea region?

The aim of the study is, in accordance with the policy development of the issue area, to estimate movements in an integrative direction from a Swedish point of view in the Baltic Sea area, to observe resemblance with citizens attitudes. This, in turn, aim at observe the democratic legitimacy of the issue area. Integration is here defined as a process dependent on citizens attitudes in ways of identification. The result shows that there is a low degree of congruence between the view of decision-makers and the public when it comes to development and common future of the area. The result is also negative concerning occurrence of a common identity in the area. In a future perspective the situation looks brighter; since a predominant majority of the Swedish citizens are positive to an increased degree of integration in the Baltic Sea area.
