Seminar on Climate Insurance and the African Risk Capacity
Date: 18 April
Venue: Hörsalen, Sida
The seminar will be webcasted live here. Start time 14:30 (GMT+2)
At the Climate meeting COP 21 world leaders agreed that mobilizing funding for strengthening resilience to climate change in vulnerable countries is one key priority. Climate Risk Insurances is an innovative approach to achieving that ambition. Climate Risk Insurances can mobilize funding from private sources, integrate poverty reduction and climate resilience objectives, decrease humanitarian funding needs and strengthen capacity to manage risk in vulnerable countries.
Since 2011 Sida is supporting the African Union’s African Risk Capacity (ARC) in its work to improve the capacity of AU Member States to manage natural disaster risk, adapt to climate change and protect food insecure populations. The ARC offers weather insurance to participating governments through its financial affiliate, the ARC Insurance Company Limited (ARC Ltd.) The 2014 Sahel drought triggered ARC Ltd pay-outs to Mauretania, Niger and Senegal, which made it possible to respond to the drought and reaching more than 1.2 million beneficiaries at an early stage of the crisis.
In April the ARC Ltd holds a board meeting and general members meeting in Stockholm. The Africa Department of Sida wants to seize the opportunity to learn more about Climate Risk Insurance and what role they could play in Swedish Climate Change policy and support.
We therefore invite you to a short seminar on April 18th 2016.
