Reaching out to Children in Poverty - The integrated child development services in Tamil Nadu, India

Indias Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) provides supplemental food, health and nutrition education, a preschool and improved health services to women and children. Expanding throughout the country, it can improve young childrens health and nutrition, their readiness for school, and their mothers caring capacity. During 1997-1998, the project was evaluated by a team of external, state and national government representatives. A follow up review was done in 1998-1999 by a team of independent specialists. Prestudies examined project innovations, targeting, adolescent girls schemes, community participation, fiscal and economic aspects, and analysed existing project monitoring data for trends in key indicators.
