Since the late 1980s SAREC has supported the following four natural science projects at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare, which are considered of particular importance for sustainable economic development in the country: Protein Biotechnology, Chromite Mining and Ferrochrome Smelting, Groundwater Resources Development, and Environmental Chemistry. One main purpose of this evaluation of the impact and efficiency of the Sida/SAREC support for natural science research in Zimbabwe was to produce material for the decision regarding future support. Since individual inputs in the supported projects rarely are simply related to the individual project outputs, it has not been possible to perform a detailed cost/benefit analysis. Instead of an overall evaluation of project outcomes (research capacity building and research results) in relation to project costs has been attempted.
