The core activities of the Law, Race and Gender Unit are, inter alia, 1) to build the capacity of magistrates to become consciously aware of, and apply issues of social context in their decision making process; e.g. to bring magistrates into mainstream thinking around issues such as poverty, HIV/Aids and gender. The main thrust of the organisation's work has therefore, been social context training and the raising of awareness within the magistrates' courts in the country. The social context training was initially aimed to provide magistrates with the necessary knowledge and understanding of the complex nature of contemporary South Africa and the new justice system
