The Zimbabwe Expanded Programme of Immunization (ZEPI) was launched in 1982 as an integral part of the country's Primary Health Care Programme with the overall objective of reducing morbidity and mortality due to six target diseases namely measles, poliomyelitis, whooping cough, tetanus, tuberculosis and diphteria. This would be achieved through attaining and sustaining a high immunization rate. In addition, pregrant women are immunized against tetanus in order to prevent children against neonatal tetanus.
