African Economic Research Consortium (AERC)
AERC from Kenya is ranked seven of the top thirty think tanks in Sub-Saharan Africa and number 26 of the top thirty think tanks worldwide. The organisation is also on the ranking for top thirty international development think tanks and top thirty international economic policy think tanks with placement 30 and 29 respectively. AERC is an African network for research and research education in national economy, consisting of 24 universities in 19 African counties. Sida has supported AERC for many years.
The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR)
CGIAR from USA is ranked 15 of the top thirty environment think tanks. It is a global partnership between research organizations that works to reduce poverty and famine, to improve health and nutrition and to increase the resistance of the ecosystems through international research, partnership and leadership. The World Bank, USA and various FN organizations are the main funders. Sida has supported CGIAR since 1973. The Sida contribution 2010-2012 is 226 500 000 SEK.
Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA)
CODESRIA from Senegal is ranked 29 of think tanks with the best use of the internet or social media to engage the public. CODERSRIA is part of the cooperation for research, education, publication and distribution in social science called South/South. The objective of the cooperation is to establish collaboration between researches in Africa, Asia and Latin America and to bring the south perspective forward in global development issues. Sida has supported CODESRIA since 2005.
Guttmacher Institute (United States)
The Guttmacher Institute ranks 18th of the top thirty health policy thing tanks in the world. The institute works to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights through an interrelated program of research, policy analysis and public education designed to generate new ideas, encourage enlightened public debate and promote sound policy and program development. The Institute’s overarching goal is to ensure the highest standard of sexual and reproductive health for all people worldwide. Sida supports the institute with 3 million SEK for 2010-2012 .
International Institute for Environment and Development (United Kingdom)
IIED is ranked 13th of the top thirty environmental and 9th of the top thirty international development think tanks in the world. The organisation is a global leader in sustainable development and as an independent international research organization, IIED are specialists in linking local to global. In Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, the Middle East and the Pacific, they work with some of the world's most vulnerable people to ensure they have a say in the policy arenas that most closely affect them — from village councils to international conventions. Sida has supported IIED for many years, currently with 72 million SEK for 2009-2013.
Stockholm Environment Institute (Sweden)
SEI is ranked 8th of the top thirty environmental think tanks in the world. SEI is an independent international research institute based in Stockholm but with offices in several parts of the world. SEI’s goal is to bring about change for sustainable development by bridging science and policy. SEI does this by providing integrated analysis that supports decision makers. Sida has supported SEI since the beginning of the 1990s. In the current agreement 2011-2014 Sida supports SEI with 100 million SEK over 4 years
Transparency International (Germany)
Transparency International is ranked no 1 of the top thirty transparency and good governance think tanks and 8th of the top thirty think tanks world-wide. TI’s mission is to create change towards a world free of corruption. It is a global network including more than 90 locally established national chapters and chapters-in-formation. These bodies fight corruption in the national arena in a number of ways. They bring together relevant players from government, civil society, business and the media to promote transparency in elections, in public administration, in procurement and in business. TI’s global network of chapters and contacts also use advocacy campaigns to lobby governments to implement anti-corruption reforms. Sida supports Transparency International with 15 million SEK for 2010-2012.
United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER)
The UN University in Finland is ranked six of the top thirty international development think tanks. UNU-WIDER is an international network of academics working to solve global challenges. They pursue multidisciplinary research and policy analysis to achieve structural changes for the world's poorest, build capacity to educate academics and civil servants in socioeconomic decision-making and to maintain a forum for discussion for sustainable and just development. Sida has supported UNU-WIDER since 2002. In the current agreement 2010 - 2014 Sida supports WIDER with 20 000 000 SEK.
World Resources Institute (United States)
WRI is ranked 2nd of the top thirty environmental think tanks in the world. WRI is a global environmental think tank that goes beyond research to put ideas into action. WRI work with governments, companies, and civil society to build solutions to urgent environmental challenges. Sida has supported WRI since the beginning of 2000. In the agreement for 2010-2012 Sida supports WRI with 21 million SEK for 3 years.
