Ten business principles will safeguard children’s interests

The impact of multi-national companies on children is vast – as consumers, young workers or family members of employees. Even so, children’s rights are often overlooked when companies plan their operations. This is why Save the Children is promoting ten principles that will help the business sector look at their work through a children’s rights lens.

The small store is no more than four square metres in size. Hanging on the walls are mobile phone covers and other accessories in a variety of garish colours wrapped in cellophane. On the small work bench lie piles of broken mobile phones waiting to be fixed. Victoria disassembles them, adjusting a part that has come loose or replacing something broken. Occasionally, customers come by to drop off their mobile phones, or maybe just to buy SIM Cards or other items. There shop is busy.

Citizen reporters important for a democratic development

Social media played a critical role during Egypt’s 18 days of revolution last year enabling citizens to share information and debate, and report from the ground. Citizen journalism continues to be important for the country’s democratic development, but with an ever growing amount of information on the web, there is also a stronger need to analyse and verify it.

Huge efforts to fulfil new environmental requirements

Many millions of people are dependent on the Danube – Europe’s second-longest river – in one way or another. But the river is becoming increasingly polluted. In Serbia, Sida is supporting a project educating farmers and abattoir workers about the environment. They are also receiving support for investments to reduce discharges into the Danube and into the groundwater.
