Environmental issues

Environmental considerations in developing countries

Published: Monday, June 22, 2009

Environmental issues are unfortunately not top priorities in many countries. There is little knowledge of environmental issues and it is ultimately the poorest people who are affected by deforestation, polluted water and climate change.

At Sida, environmental issues have a high priority. In April 2009 we launched a new loan and guarantee system  specifically aimed at environmental, climate and energy investments in Sida’s partner countries.

The Baltic Sea Cooperation is a project that involves all countries around the Baltic, with a major focus on environmental issues. You can read more about this work and the opportunities it presents for your company on the Baltic Unit’s web pages at sida.se.

Environment and climate are priority areas at Sida.
Our organisation has significant knowledge about how environmental destruction affects the poor of a country. We also have a large network of expert contacts in this area.

International Training Programmes

As part of Sida's work with capacity and institutional development Sida offers international training programmes (ITP) for participants from low-and middle-income countries in priority areas. ITP's methodology takes account of the desire to develop and reform that the participants' organization have expressed in their application to the program.
