    Peace organization ACCORD was created out of the disturbances surrounding South Africa’s historic first democratic election in 1994. At that time, the organization mediated successfully between various power groups in a sensitive political landscape. ACCORD has now become a respected regional player within conflict resolution and prevention – and its influence is growing throughout Africa.

    Human rights violations, such as unjust imprisonment, housing that is torn down and the dismissal or harassment of people who support the “wrong” party are common for the population of the West Bank and Gaza. Sweden and other donor countries have established a common bureau to achieve better results in the work of improving the respect for human rights.

    Sweden is supporting democratic development in Vietnam through a large cooperation involving six districts, 62 municipalities, 464 villages and about 40,000 households. In total, more than 200,000 individuals are affected in the three provinces of Quang Tri, Yen Bai and Ha Giang.

    When Sida gave the Federation of Swedish Farmers (LRF) the task of supporting the formation of a Macedonian national farming organization in 2001, hatred was brewing between Macedonian farmers of different ethnic backgrounds. Now they are co-operating, and the Federation of Farmers from the Republic of Macedonia (FFRM) organization negotiates with the government.

    Land theft, or the involuntary eviction of people from their homes, is a far too common occurrence for many poor people in Cambodia. Land theft is a crime against human rights. Sida is supporting non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that work with human rights in Cambodia, some of which focus on combating land theft.

    More than 300,000 displaced Somalis live in three refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia without any hope of being able to leave in the foreseeable future. The Church of Sweden is working with the people in the camps to improve their daily lives.

    Some of Zimbabwe’s newspapers are critical of the government but that is of little help when President Mugabe and his party control radio and TV. Sweden demands that freedom of the media is guaranteed before we increase our development aid to Zimbabwe.

    For a poor and disabled Sri Lankan women there is little chance to support oneself. But with the help of the Rehab Lanka project Champika Subashini, 24, from Sri Lanka was able not only to train as a seamstress but also to borrow money for her own sewing machine and start her own business.

    Religious associations can play a key role in a peace process. One example is Sudan, where the country’s Christian Council is working to overcome religious and ethnic opposition between different groups.

International Training Programmes

As part of Sida's work with capacity and institutional development Sida offers international training programmes (ITP) for participants from low-and middle-income countries in priority areas. ITP's methodology takes account of the desire to develop and reform that the participants' organization have expressed in their application to the program.
