Civil society actors have an important role in reducing poverty and contributing to a democratic development. During 2012 Sida channelled approximately 1.5 billion to its framework organisations.

Supporting actors of change who work for democratisation and freedom of expression is one of Sida's special initiatives. The support aims to strengthen national, regional as well as global organisations.

Decisions coming in March

ICT for development and democracy and ICT for empowerment of women and girls

The calls for proposals 'ICT for development and democracy' and 'ICT for empowerment of women and girls' were closed at the end of October, 2012. Applications are now being evaluated and all applying organisations will receive a reply before the end of March, 2013.

Teaching safer on-line behaviour

While the online services are becoming easier to use for activists, it’s harder to control who has access to information. A Sida-funded project will train HR activists how to utilise the potential of the web while managing the risks.

International Training Programmes

As part of Sida's work with capacity and institutional development Sida offers international training programmes (ITP) for participants from low-and middle-income countries in priority areas. ITP's methodology takes account of the desire to develop and reform that the participants' organization have expressed in their application to the program.
