Growth and social unrest

Latin America has some of the highest levels of inequality in the world. Nevertheless, poverty is falling every year. Through focused development assistance, we can help accelerate the democratic process.

Sweden’s contributions in Latin America are heading in a new direction. We are focusing our direct support on three countries: Bolivia, Colombia and Guatemala. The purpose is to make the division of responsibility between donors more effective. The target is to have greater insight and measurable results.

New methods – more effective development assistance

Development assistance should have a clearer focus in future. To make our efforts more effective, we need to have a deeper dialogue with our partner countries. In Bolivia, we are taking a long-term approach. Progress has already been made and with cutting-edge Swedish competence, we can promote democracy.

In Guatemala and Colombia, we are mainly working with issues concerning peace and security. Internal disturbances have long been affecting these countries, and such situations demand quick analyses and flexible solutions. There are difficult challenges ahead, but our work is bringing results.

  • In Bolivia, we have contributed to reducing corruption in public administration.
  • In Colombia, our support has contributed to the adoption of a law against sexually-related violence.
  • In Guatemala, Sida-supported microloans have helped 40,000 women escape extreme poverty

Our partners make a difference

Through non-governmental organizations and regional programmes, our support is reaching every corner of the region. Sida’s partners have long been strengthening civilian efforts in the fight for democratic reform. Diakonia is one partner organization that is successfully working to support democracy in the region.

Support for research in Latin America has been a prioritized area for Sida for a long time. We can influence societies by contributing to strengthening their capacity to carry out research. We reach the whole of Latin America through our support for the regional research council, CLACSO.

In addition to the countries with which Sweden has long-term co-operation, we are also supporting many other countries.

International Training Programmes

As part of Sida's work with capacity and institutional development Sida offers international training programmes (ITP) for participants from low-and middle-income countries in priority areas.
