Belarusian journalists trained in Kalmar

Kalmar is the centre for providing basic and further education to more than 800 Belarusian journalists. This represents an important contribution in maintaining the limited freedoms of expression and the press in Belarus.

Our work in Belarus

The road to change begins with the individual. Making people aware of democracy, human rights and market economics, as well as contributing to bringing the country closer to the EU, form the nucleus of Sweden’s strategy for its development cooperation with Belarus.

New strategy 2011-2014

Our cooperation with Belarus follows a new strategy for the period 2011-2014. Swedish support will be concentrated to democracy, human rights and gender equality, environment and market development.

Closure of the Swedish Embassy in Minsk

Due to the recent developments in the diplomatic relations between Sweden and Belarus, the Swedish Embassy in Minsk will close on 30 August 2012. The bilateral development aid initiatives in Belarus amount to about 110 MSEK/year. As a result of the closure Sida will not have any sent-out staff in Minsk and the management of contributions will be handled from Stockholm. The Swedish Government is currently reviewing forms and channels for bilateral aid initatives. The situation underscores the need to continue supporting democratic development in Belarus.

International Training Programmes

As part of Sida's work with capacity and institutional development Sida offers international training programmes (ITP) for participants from low-and middle-income countries in priority areas. ITP's methodology takes account of the desire to develop and reform that the participants' organization have expressed in their application to the program.
