    Osteoporosis is as common among women in Vietnam as it is in Europe, and despite the strong sunshine, vitamin D deficiency is a serious problem. These findings were presented by the researcher Huong Nguyen in her PhD thesis that she defended at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. Thanks to Sida’s research programme, she has been able to alternate her PhD studies between the fieldwork in Hanoi and the experiments and expert-guided studies in Stockholm.

    The Swedish Riksdag (Parliament) has long been cooperating with the Vietnam National Assembly to develop democracy in Vietnam. This has resulted in the assembly gaining a stronger position than previously and increasing its openness to the general public. Indirectly, the project has also strengthened Sweden’s good reputation in Vietnam, benefiting areas such as trade between the two countries.

    Lund University Hospital has commenced a six-year collaboration with a children’s hospital in northern Vietnam. The objective is to develop care so that more children in the region can survive severe cancer conditions. At the same time, Swedish doctors and nurses are gaining unique knowledge on paediatric care and research in another country.

    Sweden is supporting democratic development in Vietnam through a large cooperation involving six districts, 62 municipalities, 464 villages and about 40,000 households. In total, more than 200,000 individuals are affected in the three provinces of Quang Tri, Yen Bai and Ha Giang.

International Training Programmes

As part of Sida's work with capacity and institutional development Sida offers international training programmes (ITP) for participants from low-and middle-income countries in priority areas. ITP's methodology takes account of the desire to develop and reform that the participants' organization have expressed in their application to the program.
