At first glance, it is hard to believe that the dark little room is a recording studio. In the middle there is a round table where a few members of the editorial team are discussing the content of next season on the reality show, Ruka Juu, a contest in entrepreneurship for young people. The small store is no more than four square metres in size. Hanging on the walls are mobile phone covers and other accessories in a variety of garish colours wrapped in cellophane. On the small work bench lie piles of broken mobile phones waiting to be fixed. Victoria disassembles them, adjusting a part that has come loose or replacing something broken. Occasionally, customers come by to drop off their mobile phones, or maybe just to buy SIM Cards or other items. There shop is busy.

In Tanzania, maternal health care is free of charge but many women, particularly in rural areas, can’t even afford transportation to a hospital. Mobile phones are offering a solution. The United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, supports a project that facilitates access to fistula treatment by transferring money through SMS to cover travel expenses to a clinic.

Less than 2 per cent of Tanzania’s rural population has access to electricity. With support from Sida, Tanzania is working to connect rural areas to the national electricity network. The result is both a higher standard of living and a reduction in carbon-dioxide emissions.
