    Economic development in Africa requires long-term investment in key sectors such as infrastructure, housing and microfinance. However, such development requires a lot of money, for a long period of time. This is why Sida has co-financed a programme to improve the bond markets in Africa, which can support long-term investments in a number of countries and regions.

    Our current knowledge of how climate change affects the terrestrial environment is relatively well-developed. But when it comes to the oceans and coastal areas, information is still lacking about the effects of climate change. A marine research project in the Western Indian Ocean, will therefore fill in the gaps and develop a joint plan on how the problems should be addressed.

    Sharing natural resources is often a source of conflict. That has been the case with the Okavango River, which flows through Angola, Namibia and Botswana. In a regional project funded by Sida, the river is being used as a tool to create a dialogue between the countries, with a focus on environmental and conflict management.

    Peace organization ACCORD was created out of the disturbances surrounding South Africa’s historic first democratic election in 1994. At that time, the organization mediated successfully between various power groups in a sensitive political landscape. ACCORD has now become a respected regional player within conflict resolution and prevention – and its influence is growing throughout Africa.

    The fight against HIV/Aids in southern Africa is a key issue for the survival and development of society. A bold aim – to halve the number of newly infected people by 2015 – is creating fresh hopes about breaking the negative trend in the region. Sida is helping to build up the infrastructure to achieve this.

    Since the end of colonialism, the development of democracy in Africa has been characterized by hope and despair. Two steps forwards have often been followed by one step back. Holding legitimate and fair elections in the countries is an important key to democracy. South African democracy organization EISA has been working to create legitimate election processes in Africa since 1996.

    Since 1990, the Southern African AIDS Trust (SAT) has involved local forces in its work to slow down the HIV epidemics that plague southern Africa. Through long-term support of grass-roots organizations in heavily affected areas, the local population has become an important part of the prevention work.

International Training Programmes

As part of Sida's work with capacity and institutional development Sida offers international training programmes (ITP) for participants from low-and middle-income countries in priority areas. ITP's methodology takes account of the desire to develop and reform that the participants' organization have expressed in their application to the program.
