The situation in Ethiopia is contradictory. Since disturbances surrounding the 2005 election, the government has adopted a stronger position against opposition forces. This negative democratic situation has led to serious restrictions on our development cooperation.
At the same time, the government’s ambitious plan to reduce poverty has been successful in other areas. Many projects, particularly within education and health, have led to important improvements for the many poor people in the country.
You can find Ethiopia’s official plan to combat poverty – PASDEP.
Important crossroads await
Ethiopia faces some difficult challenges. A dramatic population increase followed by more frequent dry periods is putting severe pressure on both the environment and those living in poverty. Millions of farmers must become self-sufficient at the same time as sustainable development must be promoted.
The country’s negative democratic curve has dramatically affected our cooperation. We are making greater efforts to concentrate on supporting the democratization process in the country. Our cooperation with local organizations will strengthen the power of the civilian society for democratic development.
