Developments in Burkina Faso

Things are changing in Burkina Faso. One of the world’s poorest countries has taken a firm hold of its own development agenda. It faces some difficult challenges, but the national plan to combat poverty is beginning to take root.

Burkina Faso’s progress in important development areas should prompt the continuation of budgetary support from Sweden. The efforts are aimed at improving financial control and counteracting corruption. The support has also helped the country’s government to double its investments in health and education. To follow up on the budgetary support, Sida also supports the country’s national statistics authority.

Together with other donor countries, Sweden is contributing directly to Burkina Faso’s national development plan through budgetary support. The country’s target is to reduce the number of those living in poverty to below 35 per cent by 2015 and to increase the average life expectancy to at least 60.

Long-term solutions for a better future

Difficult circumstances are challenging a population that has already had to go through a great deal. Burkina Faso often suffers severe droughts and natural resources are extremely limited in the densely populated country. The current stable economic growth must be complemented with long-term strategies to help future generations.

The future of millions of poor people is determined by the government’s continued focus on fighting poverty. Important progress within education and health must be followed up. New solutions are required for effective and sustainable farming. We are now extending our co-operation to help the country realize its own visions.

Sweden’s focus areas in Burkina Faso include:

  • democracy and human rights
  • education and health
  • environment and natural resources
