    To meet the threat of climate change, Bangladesh launched a national strategy and action plan 2009. A multi donor climate change fund will help the government to implement the ten-year plan and Sweden will be contributing SEK 90 million.

    The general level of awareness of climate change in Cambodia is extremely low. At the same time, the country is classified as one of the world’s most vulnerable with regard to the effects of climate change. Cambodian NGOs are playing an important role in helping villagers to adapt when cultivation conditions change.

    Our current knowledge of how climate change affects the terrestrial environment is relatively well-developed. But when it comes to the oceans and coastal areas, information is still lacking about the effects of climate change. A marine research project in the Western Indian Ocean, will therefore fill in the gaps and develop a joint plan on how the problems should be addressed.

    The people living around Pungwe River are entirely dependent on its water. They drink it, swim in it, wash and water their crops with it. This is why it is so important that the water remains clean. Joao no longer pans for gold in the river, but in a special pond. Sharing information and new methods are a part of a programme supported by Sida.

    The use of pesticides is increasing steadily in South and Southeast Asia. Using excessive amounts of pesticides is a major problem and many of the chemicals that are used are illegal in the Western countries. In order to reduce health problems and improve the harvest, Sida supports a programme that promotes a good management of chemicals in the region. The participating farmers get a chance to learn about the advantages of using less pesticide in the fields, in favour of more biological methods.

    A fire tragedy in the Sinai slum of Nairobi on August 12, 2011 has put sharp focus on the rapid and unplanned growth of Kenyan urban centres. Around 95 people have so far died in the accident.

    Since late 2008, Sida finances EBRD Business Advisory Services Programme in Moldova (BAS Moldova)in Moldova. The main objective is that small and medium size enterprises with the help of subsidized consultant services will decrease their energy consumption through energy efficiency. The main goal is that Moldova will be more self-sufficient in the energy sector as well as increased competitiveness among Moldovan enterprises.

    Sharing natural resources is often a source of conflict. That has been the case with the Okavango River, which flows through Angola, Namibia and Botswana. In a regional project funded by Sida, the river is being used as a tool to create a dialogue between the countries, with a focus on environmental and conflict management.

    Less than 2 per cent of Tanzania’s rural population has access to electricity. With support from Sida, Tanzania is working to connect rural areas to the national electricity network. The result is both a higher standard of living and a reduction in carbon-dioxide emissions.

International Training Programmes

As part of Sida's work with capacity and institutional development Sida offers international training programmes (ITP) for participants from low-and middle-income countries in priority areas. ITP's methodology takes account of the desire to develop and reform that the participants' organization have expressed in their application to the program.
