    The use of pesticides is increasing steadily in South and Southeast Asia. Using excessive amounts of pesticides is a major problem and many of the chemicals that are used are illegal in the Western countries. In order to reduce health problems and improve the harvest, Sida supports a programme that promotes a good management of chemicals in the region. The participating farmers get a chance to learn about the advantages of using less pesticide in the fields, in favour of more biological methods.

    Liberia in West Africa has gone through decades of civil war and violence. Since 2003, a fragile peace has been in place and the country is slowly recovering. Sweden supports the reconstruction of Liberia in collaboration with the World Bank and IFC. The aim is to facilitate businesses that invest in the country and therewith contribute to economic growth.

    Since late 2008, Sida finances EBRD Business Advisory Services Programme in Moldova (BAS Moldova)in Moldova. The main objective is that small and medium size enterprises with the help of subsidized consultant services will decrease their energy consumption through energy efficiency. The main goal is that Moldova will be more self-sufficient in the energy sector as well as increased competitiveness among Moldovan enterprises.

    Land theft, or the involuntary eviction of people from their homes, is a far too common occurrence for many poor people in Cambodia. Land theft is a crime against human rights. Sida is supporting non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that work with human rights in Cambodia, some of which focus on combating land theft.

International Training Programmes

As part of Sida's work with capacity and institutional development Sida offers international training programmes (ITP) for participants from low-and middle-income countries in priority areas. ITP's methodology takes account of the desire to develop and reform that the participants' organization have expressed in their application to the program.
