    The small store is no more than four square metres in size. Hanging on the walls are mobile phone covers and other accessories in a variety of garish colours wrapped in cellophane. On the small work bench lie piles of broken mobile phones waiting to be fixed. Victoria disassembles them, adjusting a part that has come loose or replacing something broken. Occasionally, customers come by to drop off their mobile phones, or maybe just to buy SIM Cards or other items. There shop is busy.

They are all students of microbiology and have Dr Donatha Tibuhwa as their supervisor. She moves through the groups, demonstrating and explaining.

Steve is the CEO of JD Trading – a cement company located in the heart of the Liberian capital, Monrovia.     Poor menstrual hygiene, which is an overlooked problem, is a hinder in reaching several Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). For girls and women living in poverty, tampons or pads are often prohibitively expensive. With funds from Sida’s Innovations Against Poverty initiative, Ruby Cup markets menstrual cups to women and girls living in poverty. Their biggest challenge is to have people believe in the product and build trust.

    Several small scale power plants in Tanzania have improved access to electricity in rural areas, and another sixty projects are in the pipeline. These investments are the result of a recently approved regulatory framework that has facilitated development for small power producers. Sida is one of the donors in this World Bank project.

    Mobile money, that is transferring money through mobile phones, is accelerating in Tanzania. It is easy, it is cheap and it is fast. Most important, it helps small scale entrepreneurs to invest in their businesses. Sida supports a fund with the purpose of giving access to financial services like this.

International Training Programmes

As part of Sida's work with capacity and institutional development Sida offers international training programmes (ITP) for participants from low-and middle-income countries in priority areas. ITP's methodology takes account of the desire to develop and reform that the participants' organization have expressed in their application to the program.
